Gita Philosophy: the philosophy of Karma Yoga      

           

 

Level 1 (KG to Grade 2)

           

1          Understand the importance of Gita among Hindus

2          Understand the Gita basics: origin, characters, number of shlokas  number of chapters

3          Be able to recite three shlokas

           

Level 2 (Grades 2 to 6)

 

1          Be able to recite six Gita shlokas

2          Have some understanding of the meaning of the shlokas

3          Have some familiarity with the concept of a Karma Yogi

4          Have some familiarity with the basic tenets of Karma Yoga

           

Level 3 (Grades 7 and higher)

 

1          Be able to recite ten Gita shlokas

2          Should be able to explain the meaning of the shlokas

3          Have an understanding of the philosophy of Karma Yoga

4          Do volunteer work

5          Be able to relate experiences while practicing Karma Yoga

           

 

Social Studies - History, Geography etc.of India    

           

Level 1

           

1          Be able to name the main eras of Indian history

2          Have some understanding of each era: dates, important events and characters

 

Level 2

           

1          Be able to develop short power point presentations on eras and personalities

2          Have an understanding of the Vedic Period

3          Have some understanding of the Independence movement

4          Have some understanding of the modern India: type of government; facts, accomplishments

 

Level 3

           

1          Be able to develop power point presentations on each era

2          Be very familiar with the Independence movement

3          Be very familiar with the major accomplishments of Indians

4.         Be able to serve as adult speakers for Levels 1 and 2

           

 

Hindu Culture         

           

Level 1

           

1          Have some understanding of major Hindu festivals

2          Experience major festivals through IASC events etc.

3          Have some familiarity with Ramayana and Mahabharata

4          Practice symbolic gestures (namaste, aarti etc.)

 

Level 2

           

1          Be able to develop short power point presentations on Hindu festivals

2          Understand the origin and significance of the festivals

3          Be able to develop short power point presentations on Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas

4          Be able to recite the stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata

5          Be familiar with the main characters of Ramayana and Mahabharata

6          Understand the significance of symbolism in Hindu culture

           

Level 3

           

1          Depict their experiences of festivals through power point presentations

2          Have a clear understanding  about the teachings of Ramayana and Mahabharata

3          Be able to discuss the differences between Hindu and other cultures (pros and cons)

           

 

Hindi

           

Level 1

           

1          Be able to recite the alphabet (vowels and consonants)

           

Level 2

           

1          Be able to read simple words and sentences

2          Be able to speak some sentences

           

Level 3

           

1          Be able to read short stories in Hindi

2          Be able to carry a short conversation in Hindi

 

 

Curriculum – Objectives

 

Religion and Philosophy

 

1.      Introduce the children to the basic concepts of the philosophy of Karma Yoga as described in the Bhagwad Gita

2.      Introduce the children to selected Gita shlokas and to explain how these shlokas provide the basis of the philosophy of Karma Yoga

3.       Introduce the children to the main scriptures of Hindu religion and philosophy

 

 

Culture

 

1.      Introduce the children to India’s history, geography and languages

2.      Provide and understanding of the significance of the main Hindu festivals

3.      Explain the meaning of selected Indian rituals and symbols..

 

 

 

 

 

Curriculum - Introduction

 

The Upasana Curriculum Committee has created curriculum for Indian Culture, Indian Philosophy and Religion and Contemporary issues. The curriculum will be provided via:

 

§         Gita and other shloka discussions and recitations

§         Appropriate powerpoint presentations and handouts by Adult Speakers

§         Children presentations

§         Children “Question and Answer” sessions

§         Yoga Exercises

§         Story Sessions

§         Social picnics

§         Hands-on activities such as creating crafts

§         Participation in community events (such as India Day)

§         Rituals (singing of bhajans and prayers)
